In this explosion of colour we can see the mark of French Impressionism and the admiration that Nolde felt for Van Gogh, but these influences are carried to their logical conclusion in the vibration and the intensity of the colour. The joyful impression that the work produces is paradoxical if we know that in this period Nolde was undergoing all kinds of economic hardships and that his wife was ill.
