Belonging to Peto's last period, it is an excellent example of the final independence in the painting of the trompe-l'oeil, creating a work of absolute personality. The imitation of the nails, string, frame and papers stuck and pulle off is surprising. The photograph, of a cruder execution, represents his maternal grandfather and the inscriptions refer to the area where he lived (Tom's River). The star of David is for Peto the symbol of suffering, the suffering that he suffered because of his illness that would lead to his death two years later.
