A paradigmatic example of the high society portraits in which Sargent specialized. The subject was one of the great ladies of London society of the great Edwardian world, treated with his characteristic refined and ennobling style, which brought him so much success. Sargent knew how to carry on the British portrait painting tradition, especiallly of Reynolds and Gainsborough.
