These five pieces are in fact part of the same work: a spectacular Calvary that Baegert painted for the church of Saint Nicolau in Matena (Wessel). Taken down during the Protestant Reform it was taken to pieces and dispersed. The love of baron Hans Thyssen-Bornemisza for collecting managed to unite these five panels, which makes it possible to imagine a possible partial reconstruction. The style shows us the Flemish influence and the experience of the artist, who has managed to imbue it with great narrative force and the capacity to depict numerous details in the clothes and incidental elements.
