This panel was to form, together with the previous one, part of a great polyptych of large proportions on the life of the Virgin. And like the previous one, the religious theme becomes a pretext for a particular vision of a rich everyday interior full of all type of details. There are three spatial areas: in the background, in a landscape that we see through the window, the Visitation; in the middle-ground, a different room and, in the foreground, the room where the Virgin, with her back turned but conscious of the miraculous apparition, receives the annunciation from the angel. The objects have, as is traditional in Dutch painting, a symbolic funtion of allegorical representation of Mary's purity and virginity.
