Biography
These two works form a pair following the tradition of the placing of the man on the left and the woman on the right. It is a patrician married couple from an important Baviera family. Ruprecht Stüpf was a member of the Council of the city of Munich and was a tax collector; he appears with a glazed, energetic look in his eyes and is wearing rich black garments and a wide fur collar. In the background, a green curtain that continues in the portrait of his wife, treated with softer brushstrokes and a delicate aspect. Both personages maintain a cold, distant air, characteristic of the courtly portrait of Mannerism.
