A very important work of the last period of the Florentine Duocento, before the great changes protagonized by Giotto, and a sign of the persistence of Bizantine models in this period. The iconography corresponds to the Virgin Hodigitria, who shows the Child as the way to salvation. A series of elements -the flat character of the colour, the hierarchic differences in size and the expressionless faces- take us back to the conventionalities characteristic of this period.
