In a nocturnal atmosphere there unfold a series of scenes, related with each other to tell us the passion of Christ, the heterogeneous character of which gives a certain sensation of confusion. In the foreground, a group of soldiers on horseback and on foot, seem to be arguing with one another pointing at the three crucified men; in the middleground, the Virgin held up by Saint John and attended by two holy women; in the background, the way up to Calvary, with Christ carrying the cross and a strange entourage in which we see a king and a bishop. To such a complex iconographic programme are added the landscape, the walled entrance to the city and other tiny personages who appear amid the undergrowth. The work attracts our attention because of the intense colours that the painter uses and a certain tendency to caricature the personages.
