This little panel formed part of a series dedicated to the mythological story of the Argonauts, probably meant for a cassone (bridal chest) for the Este family. The mythological subject matter was treated at the Italian Humanist courts of the Renaissance as a manifestation of the cult to Classical Times. Here, with a rather modern look, Jason and Medea are represented with their fellow travellers on the boat, surrounded by a misty sea. The work shows the characteristic nervous style of Ercole de'Roberti.
