It probably formed part of a bench for an altar, being the central panel. A surprising element is the harsh landscape in which these five figures are placed in a balanced composition, and is considered to be a youthful work of Ucello's. The painter was not so much interested in the dramatism of the moment as the creation of the sensation of space and the link between all the personages through a rhythm of poses and the movement of the bodies.
