This panel, which appears cut at the bottom, was formerly attributed to Duccio and today is considered to be one of the fundamental works of Ugolino di Nerio. The figures are silhouetted against a gold background, and are treated with a parallel criterion for composition in the pose of the Virgin and Saint John. The work offers great quality in the depiction of the fabrics and the flesh as well as in the intense dramatism of the faces.
