As part of his functions as painter to the court of Baviera, Wertinger executed numerous portraits. In this one he portrays the buffoon called "Knight Christoph", in one of the few full-length portraits known in this period, perhaps to emphasize the false distinction and certain deformity of this old man with an overlarge head.
