It has been possible to identify the subject of the portrait, because of the initials and the coat of arms on the frame, as the judge of Nüremberg Levinus Memmiger, whose image also appears as a donor of the altarpiece of Saint Catherine of the church of Saint Catherine in the same city. The severe aspect of this man of laws contrasts with the cheerful landscape in the background, marked by its vivid colours.
