GAUGUIN, Paul Figure on the Road (Rouen),
1884
Oil on canvas 73 x 92 cm
Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid
Painted in the same year that Gauguin decided to devote himself entirely to painting, settling with his wife and children in Rouen, he shows us the clear influence of *Impressionism* and, especially of Pissarro. The brushstroke based on little touches, and the de-dramatized landscape refer us to the first period of the painter, who would later change his style so completely.
