18th Century painting: From Rococo to Neoclassicism The 18th century was a convulsive period of social changes that marked the start of the present-day era. In art, this was expressed in a succession of sensibilities, from Rococo to Neoclassicism, all with an underlying seam: the new-found awareness that there are no universal principles, but rather subjective outlooks. Rococo extolled intimate atmospheres and took delight in delicacy, while Neoclassicism looked back to classical antiquity in a conscious revival of a bygone culture. At the same time, art grew more international, crossing borders: Italy, France, England, colonies overseas...
