19th Century American painting Little of this chapter in art history is on show in European museums. American painting sprang from a strong British mould in the colonial period of the 18th century, and took shape in the wake of the Declaration of Independence as a school with characteristics of its own. Its particular treatment of Romanticism with nationalist connotations was best portrayed in landscape painting. American landscape painting exalted nature, depicting America's geography as a new Garden of Eden.
