19th Century European painting: from Romanticism to Realism Romanticism represented, from the turn of the 19th century, an anti-classical rebellion that would mainly have two focuses which opposed each other to a certain degree: the German and the French. Along general lines, Romanticism represented the celebration of emotion over reason, an idea that can also be seen in successive waves of Realism and Naturalism that followed throughout the 19th century. With this emerged a new interest in nature in its purest state that was the basis for the birth of Impressionism.
