Impressionism Impressionism caused a revolution in art. With it, old-style painting is said to end and Modern Art begin. Its modernity was twofold. On the one hand, it lay in a change of theme, abandoning once and for all the transcendental 'tone' of religious or historical painting to focus on topics such as landscapes, daily life, cities, cafés and theatres. On the other hand, it lay in a change of pictorial language and techniques: light took centre stage in painting, while technique, shunning academic principles, turned personal to find the best way to depict the shimmer of light and splash of colour and so capture exactly what the artist?s eye beheld. The Thyssen-Bornemisza collections feature a wide array of paintings from this movement by its most representative artists, from its beginnings and on to its European and American derivations.
