Fauve painting At the start of the 20th century, a series of movements and groups of artists emerged that occupied the cutting edge of modern art, until Cubism made its debut. Fauvism in France and Expressionism in Germany are two of their most outstanding exponents. Both groups shared a rebellious attitude towards bourgeois society which they depicted in expressive and emotional painting that broke away from traditional ideas and was based, under the influence of Van Gogh and Gauguin, on the use of colour in its purest state.
