Expressionist painting German Expressionist painting, together with Impressionism, make up one of the largest groups of works in the collection. Expressionism is a broad movement that developed in Germany in the first decades of the 20th century. It comprises a wide array of formal manifestations which revolve around a common principle: that art should express a feeling. Rather than giving a picture of how things really are, it should convey the artist's inner vision. A number of groups landmarked this change of scene: Die Brücke, Der Blaue Reiter and, in the 1920s, the New Objectivity movement.
