17th Century Baroque painting Spearheaded by Italy, the Baroque, with its compositions and grandiloquent themes, essentially the painting of history, religious propaganda and mythological scenes, went on to flourish in France and the Netherlands where the spirit of the Catholic Counter-Reformation had triumphed and art offered a reflection of the life of aristocratic society. Together with those themes, the style opened to the representation of landscape in painting and the introduction of more intimate scenes, both influenced by countries from the North.
