18th Century Italian painting: late Baroque and Vedutisti

In the 18th century, alongside the still thriving religious and mythology painting, a new genre emerged in Italy: 'Vedute' (Views), related to the fascination for monuments and antiquity. Italy became the key reference point for classical antiquity. Ruins, the main vestiges of that mythically splendid past, became the target of cult worship and sight-seeing. And as a result, the whole country became the focal theme for art: both the ancient ruins and the cityscapes.
