The museum is presenting Mestiza Memories, an exhibition in which the Afro-Andalusian artist Carla Hayes Mayoral (born Malaga, 1997) questions the viewer on Spain and Europe’s colonial past through the investigation of identity. Starting with the combination of raffia, a material notably characteristic of African culture, and visual references drawn from the Western collective imagination Hayes Mayoral presents a mestiza and Neo-baroque installation that subverts the notion of spaces of power. Its theatricality and the wonder produced by its seemingly aestheticising execution encourage a deconstruction of the hegemonic account.

The exhibition is presented on the First Floor Exhibition Room and in various galleries of the permanent collection where its works establish dialogues with masterpieces by Old Masters such as Rubens, Jan Davidsz. de Heem, Jacques Linard and Frans Hals.

Carla Hayes Mayoral. Mestiza Memories is the 5th edition in the Kora programme which presents an annual exhibition devised from a gender viewpoint.
