Esta copa de estilo manierista fue regalada al oficial de caballería Hans Philipp von Hoheneck, miembro de una importante familia de la zona del Rin, con motivo de su partida a Hungría para luchar contra los turcos. Sigue el esquema habitual de un cuerpo central cilíndrico entre dos partes con molduras y con tapa coronada por el típico guerrero con lanza y escudo. La decoración es espléndida y variada. En el cilindro central se representan dioses y diosas marinos y putti. En las otras zonas se alternan más abajo máscaras de leones con figuras masculinas de tres cuartos y en la de arriba águilas entre guirnaldas y cabezas de animales fantásticos junto a bustos femeninos con corona. Esta obra ingresó en la colección Thyssen-Bornemisza al ser adquirida a Jacques Kugel en París por el barón Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza en 1966.

This Mannerist-style cup was a gift to cavalry officer Hans Philipp von Hoheneck, a member of an important family of the Rhine area, to mark his departure for Hungary to fight against the Turks. It follows the usual scheme of a cylindrical central piece between an upper and lower part with mouldings and a lid topped with the typical warrior with a spear and shield. The decoration is splendid and varied. The central cylinder displays marine gods and goddesses and putti. Lion masks alternate with three-quarter-length male figures in the lower part, while the upper part displays eagles among garlands and heads of fantastical animals together with crowned female busts. This piece joined the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection when it was acquired by Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza from Jacques Kugel in Paris in 1966.
