Este pequeño cobre ingresó en la colección en 1989, el mismo año que lo hizo la pintura de Joachim Antonisz. Wtewael, La Sagrada Familia con ángeles y santos, que fue la última obra de un maestro antiguo en sumarse a la colección del Palacio de Villahermosa. El artista, que posiblemente se formó con su padre Herman Saftleven el Viejo y con su hermano mayor Cornelis, fue un pintor y un grabador de renombre que se especializó, entre otros temas, en paisajes fluviales y vistas topográficas. En 1632, se trasladó a Utrecht, ciudad en la que permanecería el resto de su vida, salvo por un viaje que realizó a Basilea, durante el cual recaló en distintos parajes de los ríos Rin y Mosela. Fruto tal vez de los apuntes tomados en su camino sea este interesante paisaje, donde Saftleven capta los alrededores del Rin, en el que grupos de campesinos se afanan en sus labores agrícolas. La armonía de sus colores con sus equilibrados juegos de verdes, azules y castaños son todo un ejercicio destreza.

This small painting on copper joined the collection in 1989 – the same year as Joachim Antonisz. Wtewael’s Holy Family with Angels and Saints, the last picture by an Old Master to join the Palacio de Villahermosa holdings. Herman Saftleven, who may have trained with his father Herman Saftleven the Elder and his older brother Cornelis, was a famous painter and engraver who specialised in river landscapes and topographical views, among other subjects. In 1632 he moved to the city of Utrecht and lived there for the rest of his life except for a trip to Basel, during which he visited various places along the Rhine and Moselle rivers. This interesting landscape, in which the artist captures the surroundings the Rhine where groups of tiny countryfolk toil the land, may have been painted from sketches he made along the way. The harmonious colours, with balanced interplays of greens, blues, and chestnuts, attest to his skill.
