Esta pintura, de cuya procedencia se tienen pocos datos antes de su adquisición por el barón en 1997, es una obra única en la producción del artista barroco Francesco Maffei por dos motivos: está realizada sobre una lámina de piedra, soporte de gran fragilidad, y, además, trata un tema inédito dentro del repertorio del artista. Aunque se desconoce cómo se desarrolló su periodo de formación, muchas de sus obras tempranas recuerdan la pintura de los venecianos Bassano y Veronés. La escena está cargada de movimiento gracias a la virtuosa representación de las alas desplegadas y a los numerosos pliegues del manto del arcángel quien, ocupando el centro de la composición, vence a Lucifer a sus pies. El fondo está resuelto con gran maestría mediante unas pinceladas sueltas y un intenso juego de luces y sombras.

Little is known about the provenance of this painting before it was acquired by the baron in 1997. It is unique in the output of the Baroque artist Francesco Maffei for two reasons: it is executed on a stone panel – a highly fragile support – and the subject is furthermore new to his repertoire. Although the artist’s formative years are not documented, many of his early pictures recall the paintings of the Venetians Bassano and Veronese. The scene is infused with movement thanks to the skilled depiction of the outstretched wings and the many folds of the cloak worn by the archangel, occupying the centre of the composition, who overthrows Lucifer at his feet. The background is executed with great mastery using loose brushstrokes and an intense interplay of light and shadow.
