This session analyses German painting from the 14th to the 16th centuries as a unique tradition characterised by a powerful spirituality and expressiveness and distinct from Italian classicism and Flemish naturalism. It examines the continuity of religious imagery and the emergence of portraiture and mythology within a context of humanism and reflection leading up to the Protestant Reformation. Employing a historical and visual focus, it highlights the role of these works in the cultural shifts of the period.
