A Protestant pastor performs his liturgical duties in a nearly empty church. He is ill and lonely, and the love of the teacher Marta has become an unbearable burden. His soul is barren and his existence seems meaningless. When a peasant and his wife come to him for advice, he is thus unable to offer them any help, crushed by the weight of his own doubts. Shortly afterwards the peasant commits suicide and Tomás, the pastor, finds himself facing an immense emptiness that not even faith can allay.
