The exhibition Colonial Memory in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collections will aim to decipher the influence of colonial power on the iconography of various works in the Thyssen-Bornemisza collections. A selection of paintings will reveal “invisibilised” stories of racial domination, marronage and the civil rights struggle, as well as the introduction of the modern mercantile system based on European military control, the use of enslaved African workers and the appropriation of firstly Latin American and later Asian and African land and raw materials.

Before the exhibition opens to the public Friends can enjoy a non-guided visit with a guest on 23 June. Following the inauguration there will be in-gallery guided tours scheduled for different dates and times, as well as an online guided tour on 17 September.
