The May edition in the Focus on the Work programme looks at one of the most impressive and enigmatic creations in the collection: Matta’s The dazzling Outcast. This is a composition comprising five works which the Chilean artist termed “open cube” and which aimed to introduce the viewer into his unique pictorial universe filled with literary, spiritual and artistic references.

Marta Ruiz del Árbol, the museum’s Curator of Modern Painting, will explain Matta’s particular pictorial universe, encouraging participants to establish a dialogue and share reflections on his work. In addition, Friends taking part in this activity will learn about the research project undertaken by the Department of Modern Painting which led to the re-installation of the cycle as Matta originally devised it in 1966.
