What does Swaying Dancer (Dancer in green) tell us about Degas’ love of the ballet? What was the extent of his passion and knowledge? You may be surprised to learn how many illustrious people from worlds ranging from literature to ballet have been inspired by or referred to this work over the years.

Edgar Degas’ iconic painting, one of the most important in the permanent collection, centres the latest edition of the Focus on the Work programme, which offers Friends the chance to learn in detail about a work in the museum, explained by a member of the curatorial team. Participants share reflections, ideas and interpretations, encouraging a dialogue on the works. On this occasion the activity will be led by Clara Marcellán from the Department of Modern Painting.
