Lot and his Daughters
Hendrik de Somer’s Lot and his Daughters was acquired by Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza exactly a year before the museum opened. Purchased on the Madrid art market, it joined the Palacio de Villahermosa collection as part of an additional loan and was displayed in room 15 together with other Italian and Spanish Baroque paintings. It was an addition to the small but select group of works by Northern European painters who espoused and spread the principles of Caravaggism. Before being brought to the museum, in the summer of 1992, the canvas was restored: the paint was stabilised and old varnish was removed, as was the noticeable overpaint in the curtain and Lot’s tunic which was spoiling the work’s appearance and detracting from its quality.
