Gaza, where life endures
The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) are presenting Gaza, Where Life Endures, an exhibition by a Gazan photographer from the UNRWA team in the Gaza Strip.
For security reasons the artist has decided to remain anonymous, a fact that serves to draw attention to both the context in which these images were taken and the value of this visual account.
The exhibition brings together ten contemporary portraits of Palestinian men, women and children who survived the Israeli offensive. Each portrait is accompanied by images of personal belongings, creating an inseparable composition between subject and object that emphasises how everyday items acquire extraordinary significance in a context of devastation.
Among these objects are Mu'ayyad's ball, which refers places of play and the longing for a normal life amid destruction; Malak's shoes, which have witnessed repeated forced displacements; and the tarpaulin where Mahmoud took shelter, a symbol of extreme precariousness and at the same time of the capacity to adapt to the loss of the family home.
After more than two and a half years of Israeli offensive, 2.1 million Palestinians are living through a major humanitarian crisis marked by a scarcity of resources and persistent violence. UNRWA plays a vital role in this context as the principal humanitarian agency in Gaza, ensuring essential services such as health, education and assistance for hundreds of thousands of people. Its work is largely sustained by its local personnel, the majority Palestinian refugees who are also internally displaced.
With this exhibition UNRWA is presenting a vision of everyday life in Gaza through the faces of its inhabitants; people who have demonstrated enormous resilience in coping with extreme conditions while aspiring to live a dignified present and construct a horizon of opportunities.
The exhibition is part of the Cultura Viva por Palestina y UNRWA programme, an initiative led by UNRWA Spain to support Palestine through culture. From 18 to 23 May, the programme includes cultural activities in Madrid spanning music, film, poetry and art. All the information is available on the event website: culturavivaxpalestina.es
