Within the programme Thinking about Museums, making memories, jointly organised by the Casa de Velázquez, the Asociación Española de Historia Pública (Spanish Association of Public History), the Círculo de Bellas Artes, and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, the third round table in the series will be taking place, entitled Democratising museums: disputed memories and histories.
Museums were created to give voice to nation-states. The 21st century, however, has called into question the univocal status of the museum text. Following in the public footsteps of memory, the iron walls of the discipline of historiography have been destabilised in order to gradually promote the shared responsibility of professionals and citizens in constructing the narrative of the past. Museums are welcoming other voices, restoring the voice to those who were denied it when shaping their texts. With all its contradictions, democracy is making headway, incorporating diversity and dispute into the museum. Could it ever be possible to go back?
Moderated by Juan Ángel López Manzanares (head of content at the museum), the round table will include Elisa McCausland (journalist, researcher and author), Inmaculada Real López (Universidad Complutense de Madrid), Xavier Roigé (Universidad de Barcelona), and Jesús Izquierdo Martín (Asociación Española de Historia Pública / Universidad Autónoma Madrid).
The event is coordinated by Fernanda Celis and Luis González Fernández (EHEHI-Casa de Velázquez) and Jesús Izquierdo Martín.
