This painted stucco piece, probably acquired in 1935, is a cast of Agostino’s marble relief known as the Madonna of Auvillers (Musée du Louvre, Paris). A terracotta version of the same composition (Museo del Bargello, Florence) is thought to be the initial model for the design in marble. The present piece preserves remains of polychrome and the small holes on either side of the Virgin’s neck may indicate that she originally wore a necklace. The Child holds his mother’s hand while the angel on the left points to the coat of arms of the Pucci family. Reliefs of this kind with images of the Virgin and Child became very popular in 15th century Florence and were used for private devotional purposes.
