This canvas by Dutch painter Philips Wouwerman was one of the few Old Master paintings to join the collection in the 1980s, as by then Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza’s attention was focused on his collections of modern art. Hans Heinrich already owned a small painting by this artist – White Horse on a Riverbank, acquired in 1956 – which is on view in the Museo Thyssen. Philips Wouwerman specialised in hunting and battle scenes with horses and riders, which earned him great success. The panel is dated to an early stage in his career and displays some of the atmospheric effects found in his later works, where the views are much more sweeping.
