Although the term «Golden Age» is controversial, it was already being used in the 17th century to define a pivotal moment in the history of the Netherlands. The Republic was renowned for its political, technical, economic, religious and artistic innovations, producing world-renowned painters. This session offers an analysis of works created for a cultured clientele that demanded civic portraits, domestic scenes, landscapes, cityscapes and seascapes. The museum's exceptional collection of 17th-century Dutch painting allows for a detailed examination of this fruitful artistic period.
