Flemish Baroque was the style that emerged in the Southern Netherlands during the 17th century after the region separated from the northern provinces. This style was characterised by dramatic compositions, sumptuous colours and expressive forms. Artists such as Rubens, Van Dyck and Jordaens created a visual language capable of captivating the viewer in both religious works of the Counter-Reformation and sensual creations intended for cultured patrons.
