Karl Victor von Sendling, a respected presiding judge, faces a devastating moral dilemma when he has to judge a young woman accused of infanticide. To his horror, he discovers that the accused is his own illegitimate daughter, the product of a youthful affair with a governess whom he abandoned to comply with a family promise not to marry women of low social standing. Torn between his professional duty as a judge and his personal conscience, Karl Victor decides to risk his career and honour to try to save his daughter from execution, confronting the consequences of his past actions.
