1871. In a remote Danish fishing village steeped in Puritanism two elderly and unmarried sisters nostalgically recall their distant youth and the rigid upbringing that forced them to renounce happiness. The arrival of Babette, fleeing the Terror in Paris, will change their lives. The stranger soon has the opportunity to reciprocate the kindness and warmth with which she has been received. A lottery prize allows her to organise a lavish dinner featuring the finest dishes and wines of French cuisine. All the villagers accept the invitation but agree beforehand not to show any sign of satisfaction, which would be sinful. But little by little, in an intense and emotional ritual, they succumb to the pleasures of French gastronomy.
