The story unfolds in 1926 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and is based on the true story of Danish artists Einar and Gerda Wegener. Their lives take a dramatic turn when Einar stands in for the female model that his wife Gerda is intending to paint. When the portraits become successful, she encourages him to adopt a female appearance. What begins as a game leads Einar to an unexpected metamorphosis as he discovers his most authentic self as “Lili” and begins living as such. The marriage and work of Lili and Gerda evolve as they both embark on Lili's journey as one of the first recipients of gender-affirming surgery.
