Gertrud is a mature and idealistic woman who seeks absolute love, with a capital “L”, but her romantic experiences are always doomed to failure. She decides to separate from her husband, an eminent politician, because he prioritises work over love. She falls in love with a young musician who is starting to achieve success but he is only interested in himself and Gertrud is nothing more than a passing affair. Meanwhile, a former lover, a poet, reappears in her life hoping to rekindle their old relationship.
