In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, industrialisation, rampant urban growth and profound economic instability plunged European society into an existential crisis. Artistic practice reflected this unease through a new visual language of intense colours, agitated brushstrokes, subjective visions and distorted forms: Expressionism. Extensively represented in the museum's collection, this movement is the focus of a session that explores the different collective and individual manifestations which revolutionised the European art scene and transformed the history of modern art.
