In conjunction with the exhibition devoted to Kenny Scharf (born Los Angeles, 1958), which is part of the programme focused on the Blanca and Borja Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, the museum is showing the documentary Kenny Scharf: When Worlds Collide for the first time in Spain. Directed by Max Basch and Malia Scharf, the artist's daughter, it centres on the artist’s personal life, from his early days in New York in the 1970s when he discovered Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, happenings and street art, CBGB's and nightclubs, to his consolidation as a member of the East Village art movement in the 1980s and a pioneer of contemporary urban art. Through archival footage and interview excerpts, this documentary, which took 11 years to make, recreates the atmosphere of that legendary time and place, reflects on the relationship between popularity and artistic merit, and explores Scharf's distinctive style.
The screening includes a presentation by Malia Scharf.
