Art Study Day Rubens in Madrid

The presence in the museum of one of Rubens’s most important late works, The Martyrdom of Saint Andrew, commissioned by the Real Diputación de San Andrés de los Flamencos (Royal delegation of Saint Andrew of the Flemish), now the Fundación Carlos de Amberes, has prompted the organisation of this study day. A group of experts discuss the time Rubens spent in Madrid, which he visited twice - in 1603, during the reign of Philip III, and in 1629, during the reign of that monarch’s son Philip IV – as well as the influence of his art on Madrid in the Baroque period.
