This magnificent cup is composed of three parts from different periods, which did not originally belong to the same piece. The bowl was crafted in Nuremberg and the foot in Augsburg; the lid and stem were also produced in the Augsburg style but at a later date. The parts were joined to form the current piece before 1664. Assemblages of this kind were common in the period, as the pieces were separated for cleaning and combined in different ways. Inside the lid is the coat of arms of the Rákóczy family and above it the classical spear-bearing warrior. The piece is notable for its exquisite decoration. It was acquired by Baron Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza before 1930 and inherited by his son Hans Heinrich.
