This ciborium bears the maker’s mark of Tymen van Leeuwen, active in Utrecht in the seventeenth century. The strikingly rich decorative relief depicts heads of winged angels amid bunches of grapes, a variation on a prototype that was no longer in vogue at the time this piece was made. The ciborium, as is typical of such vessels, is rounder than a chalice and has a cover with a cross on top. It was acquired in 1972 for the Thyssen Collection.
