Russian paintings from this period very often have a particular way of ageing due to the materials with which they were created.

The Restoration Department of the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum wanted to carry out an analysis of the materials used for this particular painting in order to fully understand its conservational state. Their findings ensured the continuous monitoring of the work and its development.

The replacement of the painting’s fixed wooden frame with a mobile one, taking care to preserve old existing inscriptions, solved the problem of its misshapen fabric.
