An area treated for internal damage located precisely in the focal point of the work is clearly visible in the X-ray image: the Virgin’s face.

Technical study
El Greco: Christ with the Cross, ca. 1587‐1596. Technical study.
To mark the 400th anniversary of the death of El Greco in 2014, the museum presented the results of the technical studies undertaken by the museum’s restoration department on four works by the artist in the Permanent Collection: The Annunciation, ca.1576; Christ embracing the Cross, ca.1587-1596; The Annunciation, ca.1596-1600; and The Immaculate Conception, ca.1608-1614. The results were shown in a small display and in a microsite which offers all the detailed information about the project.

Restoration and technical study
Restauration of the work “Portrait of a Lady” by Pier Francesco Foschi
In 2019 the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza embarked on the restoration of Portrait of a Lady by Pier Francesco Foschi. In 2021 the work travelled to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, along with Portrait of a Young Man as Saint Sebastian by Bronzino, for inclusion in the exhibition The Medici: Portraits and Politics, and in 2022 it was presented at the Georgia Museum of Arts as part of the first monographic exhibition on Pier Francesco Foschi.

Technical studies and special display
Edgar Degas. At the Milliner’s. Technical study of a pastel
The museum’s Restoration and Conservation Department has spent over a year conducting a technical study of Edgar Degas’s "At the Milliner’s" made possible by the sponsorship of the Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson. The aim of this work was to gain an overall understanding of the pastel painting technique used by Degas.

Recovering the light. Restoration of Waterloo Bridge, by André Derain
The restoration of Derain’s "Waterloo Bridge" was an exhaustive process which lasted 15 months and was aimed at recovering the colours and luminosity of this masterpiece.
As a result, the painting has gained depth and recovered the vibrant light and vivid colours that characterise this great painter’s works.
