The technical language of gold in painting

Detalle de los acabados en oro en la pintura “Retrato de una dama” de Pier Francesco Foschi

One of the most fascinating features of this Portrait of a Lady is how the artist uses powdered gold to highlight details in: the chain with a cross, the tiara, the rings, and the book’s gilt edges. He applied fine gold using a brush with great precision, to convey to us what these objects would really look like if they were in front of us.

To achieve this, Foschi employed powdered gold bound with glue and applied with a brush, a traditional technique that allows the gold to reflect light in a special way. This gleam makes the jewellery look more real and enhances the visual richness of the work.
